March 27th @ BrainPOP - Game-based learning and Students as web & game makers

There’s a lot of buzz and excitement surrounding game-based learning.  But with that comes question marks – what exactly is game-based learning and how is it actualized?   This YouPD Blender is the perfect forum in which to hone your understanding and hear from educators and experts who are creating game-based learning environments.   Come hear about ways to successfully integrate games into lessons as well as tools to empower your students to be web and game makers.  We'll also be setting up a mini arcade to get a bit more hands-on and experience the engagement first hand.   Held at the fun BrainPOP Offices.  Refreshments will be served.

Agenda:

6:00 – 6:45  Keynotes (see speakers below)

6:45 – 7:15 Quick overview of Hackasaurus and GameUp

7:15 – 8:30 Break out for arcade stations by interest-based groups to share ideas and discuss challenges.

The Hackasaurus Teacher Challenge on YouPD.org

Mozilla is developing curriculum, badges, and software to help people learn webmaking skills through making. At the core of this initiative is a commitment towards supporting and encouraging others to reuse our learning offerings to teach web literacy within their communities. Students need to not just be readers, but also writers of the web.

Hackasaurus is an open source tool that helps students see and begin to play with the building blocks of the web.  In addition to becoming empowered to become web producers and remixers,  Hacksaurus can be integrated into curriculum as a way of understanding the construction of public knowledge and perceptions about issues (e.g. science, current events, etc).

This Challenge will enable you to use Hackasaurus and build a lesson integrating Hackasaurus for your students.
