Blender: Leah McConaughey and Collaborators Present Competency Based Learning and Assessment

How many times has a student asked you, "How am I doing in your class?"  Do students really know where their grades come from?  What do grades really tell students about how they're doing and what they need to improve?  This blender will look at a traditional grading system and ask how we can more effectively communicate our expectations to students.  We'll think about the concept of tracking mastery in a classroom and some of the challenges and questions it raises, especially “What should we track mastery of?

Our monthly Blenders provide a networked-learning forum for NYC-based education professionals rethinking and retooling education for the 21st century.

Join forces with other school innovation enthusiasts from across the city in a relaxed ‘open workshop’ format hosted in a social setting with food, refreshments, and WiFi. Boost your technology chops by taking on professional learning challenges, or bring along your own curriculum planning project, and get the benefit of peer and expert support. Enjoy a cold beer and inspiring colleagues with your WiFi connection. Get feedback on your curriculum from other talented teachers and technology experts.

This Blender's Format (6-8pm): 

6pm - 6:45pm: Keynote Presentation and Q+A:  Leah McConnaughy (iZone 360's Director of Instruction and Assessment) and Collaborators Present their Work With Competency Based Learning and Assessment

6:45pm - 8pm: Self-Selected Discussion Groups

Breakouts will focus on implementation challenges and unpacking the nuanced shift of thinking required to adopt a CBLA framework.  Also...network, talk, eat, drink.
